Dmitry Bivol, following his razor-close title fight with Artur Beterbiev, has provided an update on the possibility of a rematch. The fight, which took place in Saudi Arabia, resulted in Bivol losing a majority decision to Beterbiev, surrendering his WBA light-heavyweight belt and experiencing his first professional defeat. The scorecards showed a split decision of 114-114, 115-113, 116-112 in favour of the undefeated Beterbiev, with the 116-112 card sparking controversy.
Despite the absence of a rematch clause in the initial fight agreement, there is growing anticipation for a potential rematch between the two boxers in early 2025. This prospect gained momentum as Saudi adviser Turki Al-Sheikh expressed interest in supporting Bivol for a rematch. Bivol shared insights from Al-Sheikh, stating, “He told me, ‘In my opinion you won, and I want to make a rematch for you.’” However, the decision ultimately lies with Beterbiev regarding the potential rematch. Bivol maintained a neutral stance on the matter, expressing, “If it will be a rematch, I’ll be glad; if it’s not, what can I do? Just move forward.”
When questioned if he believed he could decisively defeat Beterbiev in a rematch, Bivol quipped, “I knew before how to beat him, and he knew also how to beat me! I’m sure even you know how to beat him.” He emphasised that knowing how to win is one aspect, but executing it is the challenge. The 33-year-old boxer refrained from divulging his game plan, teasing, “I will not tell you! It will be a surprise for you in the ring.”
Looking ahead, a major boxing event is being planned in Saudi Arabia for February, potentially featuring a rematch between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois. This event could also serve as the platform for a rematch between Bivol and Beterbiev. Dubois notably secured a TKO victory over Joshua in a shocking upset, retaining the IBF heavyweight belt in the process.
As the boxing world awaits confirmation on the rematch between Bivol and Beterbiev, fans anticipate the potential showdown between these formidable fighters on the grand stage.
