Dumfries and District Ramblers recently embarked on an exciting weekend walk in the picturesque Lake District. Led by Phil, the group enjoyed a trek from Braithwaite to Crag Hill, with a special highlight being the exploration of the Force Crag mines, a site of special scientific interest. The Force Crag Mine, which operated until 1991, was historically important for its lead, zinc, and barytes mining activities. Situated in the beautiful Coledale Valley, the mine is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a geological SSSI.
The journey to the summit of Crag Hill, standing at an impressive 2,753 feet (839m), presented the ramblers with a challenging yet rewarding climb. Despite the steep path and several hours of effort, the group was blessed with dry weather and stunning panoramic views across the northern part of the Lakes. The descent via Coledale Hause offered a different perspective of the landscape, with the ramblers concluding their adventure with a well-deserved stop at the Royal Oak in Braithwaite before heading back to Dumfries.
Phil’s leadership was commended by all, and the group eagerly anticipates their upcoming walks. Next on the agenda is a day walk at Gann Hill, Thornhill, followed by a day walk on Hadrian’s Wall. Both walks promise breathtaking scenery and opportunities for exploration. Interested participants are encouraged to meet at Brooms Road car park in Dumfries for car sharing at 9 am.
