Households’ Confidence in Future Finances Takes a Downturn
Households in the UK are feeling less optimistic about their financial futures, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr). The survey results revealed a decline in expectations for the year ahead, with the index dropping to 95.2 in September from 97.4 in the previous month.
The score on the index indicates a negative sentiment when it falls below 100, and an improving situation when it rises above 100. One concerning trend highlighted in the survey is the dwindling confidence in job security among consumers, which correlates with the overall slowdown in earnings growth and a decrease in the number of job vacancies.
YouGov conducts over 6,000 interviews across the country every month, gathering insights on various aspects such as household finances, property prices, and job security. The research also showed a slight uptick in homeowners’ confidence regarding the increasing value of their properties, with the score for perceived house price growth rising from 115.5 in August to 116.1 in September.
Despite some positive indicators, such as an improved outlook on job security over the past month, the overall sentiment remains subdued, with a score of 97.9 in September. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, confidence in job security saw a decline from 118.4 to 115.1.
Sam Miley, managing economist and forecasting lead at Cebr, highlighted areas of concern within the findings, pointing out that consumers are feeling less optimistic about their future job prospects amid the economic landscape. Miley stated, “Forward-looking confidence over household finances also took a hit this month, despite interest rates now starting to fall amidst lower inflation.”
The survey results suggest that policy announcements in the upcoming Budget will play a crucial role in influencing households’ confidence in the economy in the coming months. As uncertainties loom, it is vital for policymakers to address the concerns raised by the survey and work towards restoring confidence in financial stability across households in the UK.
