How to keep your child healthy during term time

Parents can often feel overwhelmed with the challenge of keeping their children healthy during term time, especially as the colder months bring an influx of germs. From common colds and flu to more serious illnesses like norovirus and chicken pox, the return to school can expose children to various health risks. This not only impacts the kids but also poses challenges for parents who are balancing work and childcare responsibilities.

Claire Nevinson, a superintendent pharmacist at Boots, provides valuable tips on how to help children stay healthy during the term. One key suggestion is to ensure that children are up to date with their vaccinations, which offer protection against infectious diseases. Additionally, it is recommended that children receive a flu vaccination annually, as flu season typically peaks during winter.

Nevinson also emphasises the importance of keeping children at home when they are ill, allowing them to rest and recover while preventing the spread of illness to others. Encouraging good personal hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing, is highlighted as a crucial step in preventing the transmission of viruses and bacteria.

Adequate sleep is essential for a child’s immune system to function optimally, so establishing a healthy sleep routine is advised. Nevinson suggests that babies and toddlers need 11 to 14 hours of sleep, while older children and teenagers require 9 to 10 hours. Alongside sleep, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is essential for supporting the immune system. Vitamins A, C, and D play a key role in immunity and can be found in foods like eggs, citrus fruits, and oily fish.

For cases where children may not be receiving enough vitamins through their diet, Nevinson recommends considering a kid-friendly multivitamin supplement. This is particularly important for vitamin D, as the body’s production of this vitamin decreases during the autumn and winter months when sunlight exposure is limited. A daily vitamin D supplement may be necessary for children to ensure they meet their nutritional needs.

By following these expert tips and recommendations, parents can help safeguard their children’s health and well-being throughout the school term and beyond. Taking proactive measures to support immune health and overall wellness can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of illness and promoting a thriving school year.
