A lasting tribute was paid to Dumfriesshire man Patrick Russell as a rowan tree was planted in his memory at Sandside Community Garden. Patrick, a beloved caretaker on a Dumfries estate, was honoured by family, friends, and colleagues at the ceremony. The rowan tree, a fitting choice as Patrick’s favourite, was generously donated by ID Verde, the organization’s ground maintenance contractor.
Linda McCormick, Patrick’s partner, expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s so lovely that Patrick has been celebrated in this way by his workmates and the Stakeford community. A rowan was his favourite tree, and we’ll now have a special place to come and remember him. He’d be delighted.” The idea for the memorial came from Carol Wadsworth, Patrick’s colleague, who described him as a valued team member known for his dedication, kindness, and hard work. She believed planting a tree in his memory would be a fitting tribute to honour Patrick’s legacy and positive impact on the team and estate.
Paul McGregor, the chairperson of the community garden, highlighted the significance of the tree being planted within the garden, a space designed to bring the community together and combat isolation. The garden serves as a place for residents to socialize, reminiscent of the chats and camaraderie Patrick enjoyed while working on the estate. The tree symbolizes a living tribute to Patrick’s memory, growing alongside the community in the years to come.
The ceremony was a touching moment for all in attendance, exemplifying the impact Patrick had on those around him. The community garden now stands as a beacon of remembrance and unity, embodying the spirit of a man who was cherished and respected by many. As the rowan tree takes root and flourishes, it will serve as a lasting legacy to a much-missed individual whose memory will continue to thrive in the hearts of those who knew him.
