Ministers Celebrate £1.1 Billion Investment in Stansted Airport
A significant £1.1 billion investment programme has been unveiled to enhance and expand the terminal building at London Stansted airport. The project, announced by Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the owner of the Essex airport, is expected to generate up to 5,000 new on-site jobs.
The investment plans, disclosed at the Government’s investment summit, aim to double the airport’s economic impact to £2 billion annually. The core focus lies on a £600 million extension of the current terminal, expanding its size by a third. The extension will include additional seating areas and new shops, bars, and restaurants. Planning permission for the project was secured in October last year, with construction set to commence in 2025 and expected to take between two to three years to complete.
Additionally, the investment programme encompasses an enlarged security hall, an on-site solar farm to cater to energy requirements, renovation of toilet facilities, and upgrades to seating arrangements. The Department for Transport has confirmed that the scheme aligns with previously agreed passenger and flight numbers.
Ken O’Toole, the CEO of Manchester Airports Group, expressed pride in the infrastructure investment that will not only create employment opportunities but also boost trade, investment, and tourism. He stated, “By investing more than £1 billion in Stansted over the next five years, we will be able to connect people and businesses in London and the east of England to even more global destinations, while welcoming millions more visitors to the UK.”
MAG, which also owns Manchester and East Midlands airports, is dedicated to supporting the sustainable growth of airports to contribute to the success of the UK’s key high-value industries. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh emphasised the government’s commitment to facilitating the growth of British businesses and enhancing the UK economy. Haigh noted, “This announcement is a clear signal that Britain is open for business,” highlighting the significance of transportation in the government’s economic growth strategy.
The investment in Stansted Airport reflects the government’s efforts to provide companies like Manchester Airports Group with the assurance to invest, thereby fostering regional and national economic development and supporting the aviation sector, all while meeting environmental responsibilities. The investment programme showcases a promising future for Stansted Airport, contributing to increased connectivity and economic prosperity in the region.
