A mother from Texas has been arrested for allegedly causing a car crash while intoxicated and abandoning her nine-year-old son, who suffered severe head injuries, with part of his skull exposed. Monica Tutt, 39, was reportedly drunk and speeding when she collided with two parked cars in Southeast Oak Cliff, Dallas County. The incident, which left Tutt’s son in critical condition, was witnessed by multiple onlookers who heard the crash.
According to a police affidavit obtained by Fox News, after the crash, Tutt initially tried to flee in the damaged vehicle, but was unable to do so. Witnesses stated that Tutt’s sister arrived shortly after the crash, and both women extracted the unresponsive boy from the backseat of the car. They attempted to transfer him to another vehicle unsuccessfully. When Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics arrived at the scene, Tutt and her sister departed with another family member, leaving the injured child behind.
The young boy was rushed to the hospital due to a deep gash on his head, exposing part of his skull, along with air in his brain, a brain bleed, and a fractured skull. Police managed to track down Tutt by identifying her through her license plate and witness photographs of her sister’s license plate. She was located at her sister’s residence and brought back to the crash site for questioning.
During questioning, Tutt repeatedly expressed concern for her son, stating that her aspirations of a nursing career were over. The police noted that Tutt exhibited signs of intoxication, such as glassy and watery eyes, as well as a strong smell of alcohol on her breath. Tutt confessed to consuming alcohol but claimed to have only had a few drinks. Subsequently, she failed both a field sobriety test and a preliminary breathalyzer test.
Records from Dallas County jail indicate that Tutt has been charged with intoxication assault and a collision involving serious bodily injury. Bail has been set at $75,000. The case has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety and well-being of children in such situations.
