The prestigious Perth Concert Hall recently witnessed a special event where two iconic Steinway grand pianos shared the stage. The venue’s original grand piano, in use since its opening in 2005, was replaced with a new instrument. Before the older piano, leased for 20 years, was returned to the manufacturer, it was joined by its successor for a unique recital. Both pianos are Steinway D models, favoured by concert pianists.
Renowned pianist Steven Osborne from Edinburgh handpicked the original Steinway and also selected its replacement, which is on a renewable lease. Alongside fellow pianist Paul Lewis from Liverpool, they performed Music for Two Pianos on October 6 to commemorate the arrival of the new piano and bid farewell to the old one. Steven’s visit to the Steinway factory in Hamburg allowed him to choose a new instrument that would follow the footsteps of the beloved piano that had served Perth Concert Hall admirably for two decades.
The concert saw the two pianists playing duets by composers like Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms, seamlessly alternating between the two pianos. This display of musicality and camaraderie left a lasting impression on the audience. Perth Theatre and Concert Hall’s creative director of classical music, James Waters, expressed gratitude to Steven for his expertise in selecting the new Steinway. The careful selection ensures that the new piano aligns perfectly with the musical standards upheld at the venue.
The outgoing Steinway has been cherished by international music stars, broadcasters, and audiences over the years. The decision to replace it was crucial, and James Waters believes they have found the perfect piano for the job.
