The title was claimed by Travis Gienger, a dedicated horticulture teacher from Minnesota, who has now secured the top prize at the annual pumpkin-weighing competition in Northern California for the fourth consecutive year.
The 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, held in Half Moon Bay just south of San Francisco, saw Gienger outshine his competitors by a slim margin of 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) with his colossal pumpkin. Despite falling short of his own world record set last year with a 2,749-pound (1,247-kilogram) pumpkin, Gienger’s dedication to cultivating healthy soil and well-fed plants shone through in his winning entry.
Reflecting on his victory, 44-year-old Gienger attributed his success to overcoming challenges posed by adverse weather conditions, including a cold fall and record-breaking rain. He expressed his satisfaction with the hard-earned win, acknowledging the tough conditions he faced in nurturing his winning pumpkin to its impressive size. Gienger and his family embarked on a 35-hour journey to transport the giant gourd from Minnesota to California for the competition.
