This promotion comes as Felix Jones, the Irish defence coach, will continue to work remotely after resigning unexpectedly in August. Jones is under contract for a 12-month notice period, and more information about his future is expected to be announced when Borthwick unveils his squad for the autumn matches.
In the absence of Jones, Joe El-Abd, the director of rugby at Oyonnax, has taken on the responsibility for the team’s defense while also fulfilling his duties with the French club until the end of the season. Borthwick has expressed his confidence in Wigglesworth’s expertise in the game and tactical knowledge, stating that he will be a key asset in raising the standards of the England team. Wigglesworth now holds the title of senior assistant coach, with El-Abd, Tom Harrison, Kevin Sinfield, and Andrew Strawbridge rounding out Borthwick’s coaching staff as they prepare to face the All Blacks in the series opener on November 2nd.
