Rutherglen’s MSP has praised the Scottish Government’s Best Start Foods payment, as recent figures show that families in Lanarkshire have received over £8 million in the past five years. Clare Haughey MSP commended the impact it has had in tackling food poverty in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, with over £3.4 million in payments issued in South Lanarkshire since its introduction in 2019. This payment, provided every four weeks on a pre-paid card, is aimed at eligible pregnant women, partners, or families to support them in purchasing healthy food until their child turns three, ensuring that every child in Scotland has an optimal start in life.
Since its launch in August 2019, more than £57 million in Best Start Foods payments have been distributed across Scotland. The approach of providing cash directly to young families has garnered praise from the Trussell Trust, the leading foodbank charity in the UK, which asserts that direct cash aid is the most respectful and sustainable way to assist individuals facing challenges in affording food. Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey stated, “The prevalence of foodbanks across Scotland is simply unacceptable. The Best Start Foods payment is making a substantial difference to the lives of young families in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, ensuring access to good quality, healthy food for all children.”
She further emphasised that the Scottish Government’s emphasis on providing cash support has been endorsed by charitable organisations like the Trussell Trust, underscoring the significance of empowering families to make their own spending choices.
