A groundbreaking spacecraft has embarked on a mission to explore the possibility of life on one of Jupiter’s moons.
Nasa’s Europa Clipper was launched atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida, following a delay due to hurricane Milton. The spacecraft is now on a journey spanning 1.8 billion miles, with an anticipated arrival at Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, in April 2030.
The primary objective of this mission is to investigate whether Europa, one of Jupiter’s 95 moons, could support life. Scientists hope to confirm the existence of a vast ocean beneath Europa’s icy crust, which would make it a promising candidate for studying habitability beyond Earth.
During its orbit around Jupiter, the Europa Clipper will conduct 49 close flybys of Europa. The spacecraft will fly at altitudes as low as 16 miles above the moon’s surface in order to thoroughly scan the entire area during each pass.
Dr. Caroline Harper, head of space science at the UK Space Agency, emphasised the significance of water in the search for extraterrestrial life. She expressed optimism about the potential habitability of Europa due to the substantial amount of water believed to be present on the moon. The UK Space Agency has contributed £9 million towards the scientific instruments on board another mission to Jupiter, Esa’s Juice, which is expected to reach the planet in 2031.
The data collected by both the Europa Clipper and Juice missions holds the promise of providing profound insights into Jupiter’s moons, ultimately enhancing our understanding of the universe and potentially confirming the existence of habitable worlds beyond Earth.
Equipped with nine science instruments, including a gravity experiment, Europa Clipper represents Nasa’s most extensive spacecraft developed for a planetary mission. The spacecraft’s large solar arrays enable it to collect sufficient power for operation, as it ventures into the unknown depths of our solar system.
