**Sri Lanka Shuts Schools Amid Capital Flooding**
Sri Lanka took the decision to close schools in the capital, Colombo, and surrounding areas on Monday due to heavy rains causing widespread flooding across the island nation. The deluge over the weekend has led to significant damage in various parts of the country, submerging homes, fields, and roads. Tragically, three individuals have lost their lives as a result, with approximately 134,000 people affected by the floods, as reported by the country’s Disaster Management Centre. The centre further stated that the downpours and resultant flooding have resulted in 240 houses being damaged and the evacuation of nearly 7,000 people. Precautionary measures have seen authorities cut off electricity in certain regions.
Efforts to aid those impacted by the flooding have seen Navy and army personnel mobilised to conduct rescue operations and distribute essential supplies. Distressing scenes broadcasted on local television channels depicted flooded towns in the suburbs of Colombo, with water levels rising to the roofs of buildings in some areas.
Sri Lanka has been grappling with severe weather conditions since May, largely tied to heavy monsoon rains. In June alone, 16 fatalities were recorded due to floods and mudslides, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the country in managing the effects of such extreme weather events.
