Two members of the Moffat Mountain Rescue Service in Dumfriesshire have been honoured with Distinguished Service Awards at the Scottish Mountain Rescue AGM held at Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore, Invernesshire. Gary Tait and Colin Mitchell were recognised for their exceptional dedication and long service to the team.
Gary Tait, who joined the team in the early 1970s as a teenager, has been commended for his unwavering commitment through both challenging and successful times. He served as team chairman for five years and continues to be an active member, contributing significantly to various aspects of team operations. In his role as events officer, Gary has played a key part in fundraising efforts crucial for the team’s sustainability, building strong partnerships with organisations like St John Scotland.
Colin Mitchell, with over 40 years of service, has made a significant impact within the Moffat MRT. He served as deputy team leader in 1986 and played a pivotal role during the 1988 Lockerbie Disaster. Colin later became team leader in 2002 and led the team through a transformative period, overseeing crucial developments such as acquiring a permanent base and expanding team resources. He continues to be an active team member and casualty carer.
The Moffat team and the local community have expressed gratitude for the dedication and contributions of both Gary and Colin over the years, highlighting their invaluable service and commitment to the region.
