**Treatment cuts cervical cancer deaths by 40% in ‘biggest breakthrough for decades’**
A groundbreaking new treatment for cervical cancer has been found to reduce the risk of death by 40%, marking the most significant advancement in the past two decades. According to recent research in the UK, the new treatment combines chemotherapy and radiotherapy, offering hope for patients battling this deadly disease.
Experts have called for the National Health Service (NHS) to make this innovative treatment option available to all patients following a successful clinical trial. The study, conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) and University College London Hospital (UCLH), revealed that patients who underwent a short course of chemotherapy before receiving chemoradiation experienced a 40% lower risk of death and a 35% reduced risk of cancer recurrence over at least five years.
Cancer Research UK, which supported the trial, lauded the new treatment as a groundbreaking development in cervical cancer care, presenting a ray of hope for the 2,700 women diagnosed with cervical cancer in England annually. Regrettably, around 850 women succumb to this disease each year in the country.
In a bid to combat this grim reality, the NHS has committed to eradicating cervical cancer by 2040 through enhanced screening programmes and the widespread use of the HPV vaccine. While chemoradiation has been the standard treatment for cervical cancer since 1999, the disease reappears in up to 30% of cases despite advancements in care.
The Interlace phase III trial, sponsored by Cancer Research UK and UCL Cancer Trials Centre, investigated the effectiveness of administering induction chemotherapy before chemoradiation to patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. The results of the trial, published in The Lancet, were so compelling that experts are advocating for the adoption of this treatment approach nationwide and internationally.
Dr. Mary McCormack, the lead investigator of the trial, emphasised the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of this new treatment protocol, making it a feasible option for all patients undergoing chemoradiation. Encouragingly, some patients in the trial have remained disease-free for more than a decade, underlining the potential long-term benefits of this innovative approach.
Professor Jonathan Ledermann, a senior author of the study, highlighted the minimal additional cost associated with incorporating induction chemotherapy into the treatment regimen, making it a viable solution for healthcare systems worldwide. Dr. Iain Foulkes, executive director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK, underscored the timeliness of administering chemotherapy in cancer treatment, emphasising the positive impact it can have on patient outcomes.
