A tragic incident unfolded in Littlethorpe, Leicestershire, as a woman sent her mother a photo of cattle moments before being trampled to death by a cow in the same field, an inquest revealed. Rebekah Morris, 29, known as Becki to her loved ones, was out walking her dog on July 9, 2022, when the fatal incident occurred.
During her walk, Becki shared the image of the cows with her mother, with the simple caption ‘cows’. Concern arose when she stopped responding to messages, prompting her parents to search the field depicted in the photo. Sadly, they discovered her injured, and despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at 11.21pm.
The jury inquest at Leicester Coroner’s Court heard from forensic pathologist Dr Michael Biggs, who conducted Ms Morris’s post-mortem examination. He explained that her injuries were consistent with hoof marks from a trampling incident, noting blunt force trauma and abrasions to her upper chest and left shoulder. Severe internal bleeding due to liver damage was identified as the primary cause of death.
Dr Biggs suggested that the injuries indicated a relatively brief incident involving one cow rather than the whole herd. Notably, there were no sign of injuries suggestive of human involvement, with all evidence aligning with a livestock trampling incident.
While alcohol and medications were present in Ms Morris’s blood, Dr Biggs clarified they were not a dangerous combination. The inquest is ongoing, expected to span five days, as further details surrounding the tragic event are explored.
