Genome study cracks mystery of Japan’s first inhabitants

A recent genome study has unravelled the mystery surrounding Japan’s earliest inhabitants, revealing that a majority of them originated from the Korean peninsula. The research sheds light on the ancient immigration patterns to the Japanese archipelago, providing valuable insights into the country’s early history.

Japan, known today as a bustling international travel destination, was historically isolated until around 3000BC. The initial settlers of Japan were the Jomon people, hunter-gatherer societies who had been living in isolation on the islands since 14,000BC. It was not until the Yayoi and Kofun periods between 3000BC and 538AD that immigration from continental Asia began.

The study, detailed in the Journal of Human Genetics, analysed the genome of an individual dating back to the Yayoi period, whose remains were found at the Doigahama archaeological site in Yamaguchi prefecture. By comparing this genome with those of ancient and modern populations in east and northeast Asia, researchers from the University of Tokyo discovered that the ancient individual shared the closest genetic resemblance with Koreans.

According to study co-author Jun Ohashi, the findings suggest that during the Yayoi period, the majority of immigrants to Japan originated primarily from the Korean Peninsula. These immigrants intermingled with the Jomon people, paving the way for the formation of the ancestral population of modern Japanese individuals.

The study challenges previous assumptions that different northeast and east Asian groups migrated to Japan during distinct historical periods. Instead, the research indicates a continuous influx of immigrants from the Korean peninsula between the Yayoi and Kofun periods, contributing significantly to the genetic makeup of modern Japanese people.

Scientists aim to conduct further studies analysing additional Yayoi genomes to gain a deeper understanding of the ancestral origins of the Japanese population. This groundbreaking research not only illuminates Japan’s ancient past but also highlights the intricate interplay of different populations that shaped the genetic diversity of the country.
