Jared Leto accused of ‘insulting’ Ukraine after likening Russia’s war to ‘problems’

Jared Leto facing criticism for comments on Russia-Ukraine conflict

Jared Leto is under fire from Ukraine after making remarks applauding Russia during a recent Thirty Seconds to Mars concert held in Belgrade on 11 October. The 52-year-old actor and musician, known for leading the band, made comments during the performance that have sparked controversy.

During the concert, Leto enquired about the presence of Russians in the audience, which was met with a positive response. Subsequently, Leto expressed his desire to return to Russia once the current “problems” are resolved, alluding to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He mentioned plans to tour from Serbia to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and then down to Kyiv, in a statement that has since circulated widely on social media platforms.

The footage of Leto’s statements has led to significant backlash, with many feeling that he diminished the severity of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine shared the video on Twitter, condemning Leto’s remarks, labelling them as an insult to those fighting to protect freedom in Ukraine.

Criticism also came from Ukrainian influencer Ihor Lachenkov, who questioned Leto’s awareness of the war in Ukraine and the atrocities being committed. Other voices from Ukraine have similarly expressed disappointment in Leto’s comments, highlighting the importance of supporting Ukraine in achieving peace.

It is important to note that Leto has previously expressed support for Ukraine during the conflict. Following the outbreak of war, he shared a message on Twitter, expressing solidarity with those affected and urging caution and safety during the chaotic period.

Furthermore, Leto had acknowledged Ukraine in his acceptance speech at the Oscars in 2014, amidst the crisis in Crimea, extending his thoughts to dreamers worldwide, including those in Ukraine. His speech had drawn attention and led to the cancellation of the Oscars live broadcast in Russia that year.

In response to the recent controversy, Leto’s representatives have been approached for comment on the matter. The incident underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding global conflicts and the importance of mindful communication in such situations.
