Billie Jean King and 100 Athletes to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Women’s Sports Foundation
Billie Jean King will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of her Women’s Sports Foundation alongside 100 athletes. The foundation was initially established with a humble $5,000 check from King, which has since blossomed into a $100 million initiative supporting girls and women in achieving their athletic aspirations through grants, local sports programs, and mentorship opportunities.
The anniversary celebration will honor various sporting figures, including the 1999 U.S. women’s World Cup champions, PWHL and Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, and the 2024 WNBA rookie class. King expressed her joy in creating opportunities for others, citing it as her driving force over the years.
Nearly 100 female athletes are expected to attend the awards dinner to mark this significant milestone. King, a relentless advocate for equal pay and increased investment in women’s sports, will be joined by notable personalities such as soccer practitioner Julie Foudy, who played a pivotal role in propelling women’s soccer forward after the 1999 World Cup win.
Foudy and her team sought advice from King on enhancing pay and establishing a professional soccer league. Their perseverance ultimately contributed to the progress towards pay equity, setting the stage for the current U.S. women’s national team to secure equal pay and working conditions as the men’s team.
King, a stalwart supporter of women’s sports, recently collaborated with Mark and Kimba Walter to establish the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), with the second season set to launch in late November. Furthermore, the WNBA rookie class will be acknowledged with the Next Gen Award for their outstanding contributions to the sport, spotlighting players like Caitlin Clark who have made a significant impact.
Despite the strides made, disparity in pay persists within the WNBA compared to male counterparts. However, efforts are underway to address this issue, with the hope of increasing salaries through new media rights deals and collective bargaining agreements.
As women’s sports continue to evolve, King emphasises the importance of persistent advocacy and support to bridge existing gaps in the sporting industry. Her legacy, alongside the ‘Original Nine,’ has been instrumental in advancing women’s sports, from advocating for Title IX to championing equal prize money in tennis.
