Cameron Diaz recently revealed the true reason for her decision to step away from acting in 2014, marking a 10-year hiatus from making movies. The Hollywood star, known for her roles in films like “There’s Something About Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and “Gangs of New York,” had previously announced her temporary retirement during a discussion with her co-stars Christina Applegate and Selma Blair from the 2002 comedy “The Sweetest Thing.”
After completing work on movies like “The Other Woman,” “Sex Tape,” and “Annie,” all released in 2014, Diaz expressed her desire to find space for her personal life and take time for herself to reorganize. Despite already sharing her intention to focus on her personal life, the 52-year-old actor has now opened up about the specific reason behind her decision to step away from the limelight.
Speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, Diaz explained, “It felt like the right thing for me to reclaim my own life, and I just really didn’t care about anything else.” She emphasized that no one’s opinion, success, or offer could change her mind about prioritizing self-care and building the life she truly wanted, which in her case, was focused on building her family.
Married to Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden, Diaz attributed her hiatus to wanting to focus on her family. She is now set to return to the screen with the upcoming film “Back in Action,” where she reunites with her former co-star Jamie Foxx. Diaz shared that she couldn’t resist Foxx’s invitation and is excited to work with him for the third time. The movie is scheduled for release on Netflix in January 2025.
Reflecting on her decision to semi-retire, Diaz had previously discussed the challenges of constantly working in the film industry on an episode of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Health: The Sessions. She described the demanding nature of the industry, the long hours on set, and the intensity of being constantly in the spotlight.
Diaz’s illustrious career took off in 1994 with her breakout role in “The Mask” alongside Jim Carrey. She went on to star in popular movies like “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “The Holiday,” and the “Shrek” franchise, establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
