East Kilbride MP Joani Reid has taken the lead in co-sponsoring a new UK Parliament Bill that aims to prohibit the use of smartphones by children in schools. The bipartisan legislation seeks to address the growing concerns over the negative impact of smartphones on children’s mental health, education, and overall wellbeing. Reid, the Member of Parliament for East Kilbride and Strathaven, is championing efforts to restrict smartphone usage among schoolchildren, citing research that highlights the adverse effects of excessive smartphone use.
Recent studies have revealed alarming statistics, indicating that the average 12-year-old in the UK spends 29 hours per week on their smartphone, which is equivalent to a part-time job. Additionally, one in four children show signs of smartphone addiction. Experts have cautioned about the detrimental effects of smartphones, especially social media, on children’s mental health, sleep patterns, and learning abilities. Concerns have also been raised about the diminishing opportunities for real-world play and social interactions, with vulnerable children being particularly susceptible to these negative impacts.
Despite education policy being devolved to Scotland, Reid emphasised the significance of the Bill for the entire UK, especially in areas like GDPR, digital safety, and Ofcom regulation, which are not devolved matters. She expressed optimism that both the UK and Scottish governments, along with other devolved administrations, would collaborate to implement the smartphone ban nationwide. Labour MP Josh MacAllister, representing Whitehaven and Workington, who will present the Bill in Parliament, underscored the urgency of addressing the harmful consequences of children’s excessive screen time and likened the proposed legislation to a “seatbelt” law for social media use among children.
The Bill has garnered substantial cross-party support, reflecting widespread public apprehension about the impact of technology on young individuals.
