Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo emphasised the importance of strengthening economic ties between the EU and Gulf countries, highlighting the untapped potential for further development. Discussions also touched upon human rights concerns, with plans to address these issues with attendees including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Criticism over human rights violations, such as the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, was a focal point, with calls for EU leaders to address authoritarianism regardless of potential economic benefits.
The European Union, consisting of 27 nations, has historical ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, which encompass Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait. Challenges in aligning on various contentious matters, including conflicts involving Israel and diverging perspectives on Russia and Ukraine, were apparent among EU members. Discrepancies in views towards Moscow’s actions were notable, with countries like Hungary and Slovakia holding contrasting positions compared to other EU states. Additionally, certain GCC nations have established closer ties with Russia than their EU counterparts.
