Father of Missing Son in Yellowstone Issues Warning About Search Efforts
The father of a missing 22-year-old, who disappeared in Yellowstone National Park a month ago, has issued a stark warning that if his son is not found soon, the search may have to be postponed until spring.
Austin King embarked on a solo expedition on September 14 and successfully reached the summit of Yellowstone’s highest mountain, Eagle Peak, three days later. However, he has not been heard from since, causing distress for his family as rescue efforts are being scaled back.
Austin’s father, Brian King-Henke, emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating, “If we don’t go now then we will have to wait until Spring.” As winter approaches, temperatures in the national park are expected to drop significantly, making search and rescue operations more challenging.
The National Parks Service typically closes roads from October to April due to harsh weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures. This closure poses a hindrance to conducting effective search missions during this period.
During his hike to Eagle Peak, Austin had limited supplies with him, including a water bottle and a sleeping bag. He had left a voicemail for his father expressing his joy at reaching the mountain summit after enduring extreme weather conditions. The last written words from Austin were discovered by rescuers at the peak, detailing his challenging journey and his appreciation for life.
Despite search teams finding footprints and remnants of a firepit along the trail, it remains uncertain whether they belong to Austin. Brian King-Henke has taken charge of organising additional search efforts with the help of volunteers and through a GoFundMe campaign, raising funds to support the search mission.
Describing his son as a remarkable individual and a beloved brother, Brian expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received from volunteers. Over 100 rescue personnel have participated in the search, demonstrating a unified effort to find Austin before the harsh winter conditions set in.
