Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis reveals she decided to keep her tumor after her cancer spread

Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis has made a bold revelation about her battle with breast cancer by deciding to keep her tumor even after the disease progressed. Lewis, aged 51, disclosed her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in 2020 through an Instagram post. She had avoided annual mammograms due to a fear of radiation exposure. Recently, Lewis shared that her cancer has advanced to stage 4.

During a round-table discussion with CNN correspondents Stephanie Elam and Sara Sidner, Lewis revealed that her doctors recommended a double mastectomy following her diagnosis, but she opted against it. She expressed her belief in her body’s intelligence and chose to work out the tumor in a different way. Reflecting on her decision, Lewis acknowledged the possibility that she should have followed medical advice.

Lewis adopted alternative methods to treat her breast cancer, including medication, radiation, and enhancing her sleep and diet. Despite a period of improvement, she learned last year that her cancer had spread, leading to challenges with her lymph system and a deep confrontation with mortality. Lewis shared her frustration and determination to continue fighting, despite facing significant health setbacks.

With her condition deteriorating to the extent that she was bedridden for eight weeks, Lewis highlighted the importance of her quality of life in her treatment decisions. Meanwhile, CNN correspondent Sara Sidner, who also faced a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis this year, reflected on her journey towards prioritising her well-being and resilience in the face of adversity.

Lewis and Sidner’s openness about their battle with breast cancer echoes a recent disclosure by actress Jenna Fischer, known for her role in The Office. Fischer announced on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with and successfully treated for stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer. Opening up about her experience, Fischer shared details of her journey to recovery and the importance of early detection in her case.

These stories from Lewis, Sidner, and Fischer serve as powerful reminders of the challenges faced by individuals battling breast cancer and the importance of perseverance, early detection, and personal choices in navigating through such health crises. The courage and candidness exhibited by these women provide inspiration and hope for others facing similar struggles in their fight against breast cancer.
