In a tragic turn of events, an inmate who was convicted of killing a Japanese psychic and her son back in 1994 was found dead in his prison cell in Hawaii. The staff at the Halawa Correctional Facility in Aiea, just outside Honolulu, discovered Raita Fukusaku, aged 59, bleeding on the floor of his cell with head and neck injuries on Monday, according to the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Authorities revealed that Fukusaku had been assaulted and stabbed by his 38-year-old cellmate, who was promptly removed and placed in a holding unit following the incident. Despite their efforts, Fukusaku succumbed to his injuries. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death were ongoing, with the Honolulu medical examiner’s office yet to determine the cause of death.
Fukusaku, who was serving time for two counts of second-degree murder, made history as the first Japanese national to be extradited to the United States for murder. He had been convicted in 1995 for the murders of Kototome Fujita and her son Goro Fujita. Kototome was found shot in her penthouse, while Goro was discovered dead in a car in a Waikiki hotel parking structure, with both their residence and car subsequently set ablaze.
Myles Breiner, Fukusaku’s former attorney, expressed shock over the incident, highlighting that Fukusaku had maintained a clean record during his three decades behind bars. Breiner described Fukusaku as someone who avoided gang affiliations and had good rapport with the prison staff. He lamented the tragic turn of events, asserting that such an occurrence should never have taken place.
