The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center has indicated a 60% likelihood of a weak La Nina event occurring this autumn, potentially extending through to March. La Nina forms part of a natural climate cycle, capable of triggering extreme weather phenomena globally, with effects that differ across regions.

During a La Nina phase, the trade winds in the Pacific Ocean intensify, leading to the upwelling of cold water from the depths and resulting in cooler ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific. This shift in ocean temperatures alters the position of the jet stream, a high-speed air current crucial in influencing storm paths and precipitation levels.

Recent history has shown a notable trend of back-to-back La Nina events from 2020 to 2023, a rare occurrence according to experts. Michelle L’Heurex, a climate scientist at NOAA, highlighted that La Nina episodes typically last longer and recur more frequently than El Nino events, impacting regions differently based on their geographical location.

Specifically, northern South America may experience increased rainfall, while the southern United States and parts of Mexico might face drier conditions than usual. Meanwhile, regions like the northern U.S. and southern Canada could anticipate above-average precipitation levels.
