Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has implemented a new rule banning farewell hugs that last longer than three minutes. A sign at the airport’s drop-off area states, “max hug time 3 minutes,” and suggests using the car park for “fonder farewells.”
The introduction of this rule has sparked a lively debate on appropriate farewell etiquette at departures, with reactions ranging from amusement to disbelief. One member of a Facebook group called ‘The view from my window’ commended the rule, stating that it shows warmth and compassion. In contrast, another member criticised the three-minute limit as inhumane, arguing that hugs cannot be timed.
Social media users from the US also weighed in on the discussion, sharing experiences from American airports where stopping is discouraged, and passengers are expected to exit the vehicle quickly. The concept of a three-minute hug prompted reflection for some individuals, with one man sharing that he could only imagine hugging a select few people for that duration.
The issue of drop-off fees for drivers at airports has also been raised, with more than a third of major UK airports increasing charges in the past year. The practice of “kiss and fly” fees, which are applied for dropping off passengers close to the terminal, has seen price hikes at seven out of 20 airports analysed by the RAC. Airports such as Gatwick, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Bristol have raised their fees by £1 for various time limits, with some now charging up to £6 for 10-15 minutes.
