Sales of 70s classic food soar 40% as it aids weight loss and muscle growth

Sales of a classic 70s food staple have surged by an impressive 40% as consumers leverage its benefits for weight loss and muscle growth, revealed nutritionists and farmers. Cottage cheese, a dairy product synonymous with the 70s and 80s era, is making a strong comeback due to its low-fat content. The resurgence of cottage cheese is attributed partially to the global trend favouring high-protein and low-fat dairy options, driven by viral recipes circulating on social media platforms such as TikTok.

Interestingly, the hashtag #cottagecheese witnessed a notable increase in views, with projections to reach a billion at one point. Graham’s Family Dairy, a producer based in Scotland, reported a 40% spike in sales of this traditional product. Managing director Graham acknowledged the challenges in keeping up with the heightened demand, especially amid the surge in cottage cheese, protein yogurts, gold top milk, and butter sales. He highlighted the shift towards younger consumers embracing these products for their health benefits, affordability, and taste.

Nutrition experts, including Edward Mather from Fuel Hub, have commended cottage cheese for its current popularity surge. Mather emphasised the convenience and nutritional value of cottage cheese, praising its high protein content, low calorie count, and rich micronutrient profile that supports overall health and well-being. A 100-gram serving of low-fat cottage cheese contains just 84 calories while offering 11g of protein, along with essential nutrients like calcium, potassium, and selenium crucial for bodily functions.

Mather noted how cottage cheese can play a vital role in weight loss and achieving fitness goals by providing a high protein and low-calorie option for muscle growth and recovery post-workout. He explained that the calcium content in cottage cheese supports bone strength and efficient muscle function, essential for athletes. Additionally, its protein-rich composition helps in maintaining consistent energy levels throughout the day, assisting athletes in avoiding overeating and sustaining performance.

The Cleveland Clinic in the US also endorsed cottage cheese as a favourable choice for weight management due to its high protein content, low-fat nature, and calcium provision. With its versatility, nutritional benefits, and role in supporting muscle growth and recovery, cottage cheese has undoubtedly earned its moment in the nutritional spotlight.

In summary, the renewed interest in cottage cheese reflects a broader trend towards healthier eating habits and the recognition of dairy products like cottage cheese as valuable allies in achieving fitness and wellness goals. The combination of social media influence, nutritional benefits, and taste appeal has propelled cottage cheese to the forefront of dietary choices for a diverse range of consumers looking to improve their health and fitness levels.
