A senior US official has issued a warning about the nuclear threats posed by North Korea and their increasing military support for Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell expressed alarm at North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, as well as their backing of Russia in the war. However, Campbell mentioned that he could not confirm Ukraine’s allegations that North Korea had also deployed troops to aid Moscow.
Campbell’s remarks came after discussions with South Korean and Japanese officials on revitalising international pressure against North Korea, which has faced challenges due to divisions within the UN Security Council. To address the situation, the US, South Korea, Japan, and eight Western nations revealed plans to establish a multinational team to oversee the enforcement of sanctions on North Korea.
The official noted signs of North Korea providing military materials such as artillery and missiles to support Russia’s actions in Ukraine, further destabilising Europe. While reports of North Korean personnel being sent to assist Russia are under evaluation, Campbell highlighted the need to closely monitor the situation in response to these claims.
Amidst escalating tensions, North Korea has also been making aggressive gestures towards South Korea, accusing them of sending drones to spread anti-North Korean propaganda and threatening retaliation. This comes as North Korea demolished disused transport links with South Korea, showcasing their discontent with the South’s government.
The Korean Peninsula has witnessed heightened tensions since 2022, with North Korea escalating weapons testing in response to events in Ukraine. In reaction, the US, South Korea, and Japan have bolstered joint military exercises and fortified nuclear deterrence strategies with strategic US assets. Following discussions with Campbell and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano, South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun reaffirmed the countries’ united stance against North Korean provocations.
