The head of Mali’s military junta, which took control in 2020, has elevated himself to the highest rank in the army, declaring himself an army general with the distinguished title of Colonel Assimi Goita of the land army. This particular rank has been held by only two former heads of state in the history of Mali. The move made by Goita suggests a consolidation of power and a reluctance to transfer authority to civilian leadership in the West African nation.
This announcement was made by the Council of Ministers through a statement on the Malian government’s official website. Additionally, five other influential colonels within the military junta were also promoted to the rank of four-star generals in an “exceptional” manner. Analysts have interpreted these promotions as a signal that the junta leaders are solidifying their positions as the ruling authority and are not planning for a democratic transition to civilian governance in the near future.
Rida Lyammouri, a senior fellow at the Policy Center for the New South based in Morocco, commented on the situation, stating, “This is another indication that junta leaders will continue to position themselves as the only rulers, and have no intention of having a democratic transition into civilian rule anytime soon.” As of now, no specific date has been established for Mali’s forthcoming presidential election, leaving the country’s political future uncertain.
