A man has been charged with murder in connection with an Alabama shooting that left 4 dead, according to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond. Damien McDaniel, 22, has been arrested and charged with capital murder for the mass shooting that occurred in the Five Points South entertainment district last month. Additionally, McDaniel faces 17 counts of attempted murder for those who were wounded during the incident.
Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed that McDaniel’s arrest was a significant step towards justice in a statement following the charges. When questioned about the possibility of more arrests, Chief Thurmond mentioned that the investigation is ongoing. The police had previously reported that multiple shooters had opened fire on a crowd waiting outside a nightclub. It is still being determined whether the shooting was targeted at a specific individual, as the motive is yet unclear.
In addition to the Five Points South shooting, McDaniel is also implicated in two other fatal shootings that took place in Birmingham within a three-day span in September. Three additional individuals were charged in connection with one of those incidents. Chief Thurmond assured that there is more progress to come in these investigations as they prepare for court proceedings.
The shooting on Sept. 21, which claimed the lives of Anitra Holloman, Tahj Booker, Carlos McCain, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., had a significant impact on the community and garnered national attention. As the case unfolds, authorities continue to delve into the details surrounding these tragic events.
The city of Birmingham remains on edge following the violence that unfolded last month, and the charges against McDaniel shed some light on the ongoing investigations into these heinous crimes.
