Archaeologists discover ‘significant’ permanent side-effect of smoking

Archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery regarding the long-lasting effects of smoking on human skeletal remains. Research conducted by experts from the University of Leicester has revealed that tobacco leaves traces in the bones of smokers, not only during their lifetimes but for centuries after their deaths.

The study focused on human remains buried in Britain from the 12th to the 19th centuries, demonstrating the significant impact of tobacco consumption on bones. The findings highlight a correlation between smoking and bone-related conditions, such as an increased risk of fractures, shedding new light on the structural changes caused by tobacco introduced to Western Europe 500 years ago.

Traditionally, archaeologists used dental evidence to identify smokers, but this method was often ineffective when teeth were absent or not well-preserved. The University of Leicester team analysed cortical bones from known tobacco users and individuals with unknown smoking histories, using mass spectroscopy to identify 45 molecular features that distinguished between smokers and non-smokers.

Dr Sarah Inskip, a co-author of the study, highlighted the substantial differences in bone structure between past tobacco users and non-users. The research aims to understand how these differences emerge, potentially offering insights into the skeletal consequences of smoking-related musculoskeletal and dental disorders.

While the harmful effects of smoking on soft tissues and organs are well-documented, the impact on bones has been less explored. Smoking has been associated with conditions like low bone density, increased fracture risks, and periodontitis. This research not only provides historical insights into smoking prevalence but also emphasises the enduring influence of tobacco on human health.

The study published in Science Advances points out that tobacco consumption leaves a distinct metabolic record in human bones, offering direct evidence to study past health conditions linked to tobacco use. By examining archaeological human remains, researchers can gain valuable knowledge about diseases associated with smoking.

This discovery opens new avenues for understanding the long-term consequences of smoking on human health. The research underscores the importance of exploring the skeletal effects of tobacco use, providing vital information for improving public health policies and interventions related to smoking cessation.
