State regulators in Colorado have ordered the closure of a former gold mine where a tragic incident resulted in the death of a tour guide and left a group of tourists stranded for hours due to an elevator accident. The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety made the decision to shut down the Mollie Kathleen Mine pending a thorough review of its operations following the incident on October 10.
The closure order was issued after an inspection revealed potential safety concerns at the mine. The regulatory agency is investigating whether the death of the tour guide, Patrick Weier, was a consequence of the mine’s failure to adhere to regulations. The closure notice cited an imminent or substantial danger to workers or the public as grounds for the shutdown.
Prior to the tragic incident, the mine’s inspection records were reported as satisfactory, with no prior safety issues recorded. The mine, which was due to close for winter, will remain off-limits to visitors until further notice. Located near Colorado Springs, the Mollie Kathleen Mine is unique as the only tourist mine featuring a public elevator for descent into the underground site.
The fatal accident occurred when the elevator operator detected an issue about 500 feet underground and halted the descent. While eleven individuals were safely evacuated, a group of twelve adults were left stranded at the bottom of the mine, approximately 1,000 feet below ground. Authorities ensured the trapped group had access to necessities and kept in communication until engineers could resolve the elevator malfunction.
The investigation into the incident involves Teller County Sheriff’s office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Labor Department confirmed that a comprehensive probe will be conducted over the next six months. The mining division has pledged its cooperation with the ongoing investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
