Eurostar has implemented significant fare reductions for passengers travelling between London and Paris who are seeking flexibility in their booking arrangements. As reported by The Independent, following the challenges posed by the pandemic, Eurostar fares for trips to Paris, Lille, and Brussels have been notably high. For instance, the lowest standard return fare from London to Paris has been priced at £318 for the upcoming weekend of October 25th to October 27th. In comparison, budget airline EasyJet is offering return flights from Luton to Paris for just £158 during the same period.
Despite the competitive air links between London and Paris post the lifting of Covid travel restrictions, Eurostar has reintroduced its “Snap” tickets to attract passengers without compromising its existing customer base. These discounted tickets, previously popular in 2016-17, come with certain conditions. Passengers are required to select their travel date but will only discover their exact train allocation 48 hours before departure. This lack of clarity on specific train times prevents day trips and may result in groups being separated.
Moreover, the Snap tickets must be purchased between one and 14 days prior to departure, limiting their appeal to travellers who prefer long-term planning. In the past, Snap ticket holders could choose between morning and afternoon/evening journeys, with fares as low as £19 for a one-way trip. The updated Snap scheme now requires passengers to have the flexibility to travel from as early as 5.40am to as late as 8.40pm. The lowest fare observed by The Independent is £40, offering savings of up to 50% on standard ticket prices if booked a week before departure.
Eurostar emphasises that the current Snap tickets deliver savings of up to 59% compared to the lowest standard fares for the surveyed dates. This revised Snap initiative extends its coverage to Amsterdam, albeit requiring a train change in Brussels solely on the outbound journey. François Le Doze, Eurostar’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the reintroduction of Snap, highlighting its appeal to travellers with flexible schedules and its positive impact on seat occupancy and the environment.
