Hyundai has issued a recall for its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the US and Canada, affecting nearly 1,600 owners. The company has advised owners of the Hyundai Nexo SUVs from model years 2019 through 2024 to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures. This precaution comes in response to the potential risk of fuel leaks and fires.
According to documents released by US safety regulators on Thursday, Hyundai has identified a possible issue with the pressure relief device in the vehicles. In the event of a malfunction, the pressure relief device could break, leading to a hydrogen leak that may result in a fire, even when the SUVs are stationary.
While Hyundai has stated that the SUVs are still safe to drive, they are recommending that owners park them outside until necessary repairs can be carried out. The automaker has emphasised that there have been no reported incidents of fires or injuries related to this issue in the US or Canada. However, it is not yet clear if similar incidents have occurred in other regions.
Beginning December 10th, owners will receive notifications by letter regarding the recall. Hyundai’s authorised dealers will then replace the pressure release devices in the affected vehicles. In a statement, Hyundai expressed that the recall is being conducted to prioritise the safety of its customers.
