Michael Gove, the former Cabinet minister and current editor of the Conservative-supporting Spectator magazine, has made headlines by publicly criticising Robert Jenrick while lauding Kemi Badenoch in the ongoing Conservative leadership race.
In a recent interview, Gove described Jenrick as a “Tory boy” and highlighted his typical Tory politician image as a weakness. In contrast, he praised Badenoch for her courage, stating that it is a defining trait of hers. Gove emphasised that Badenoch’s readiness to engage in challenging situations is a virtue, contrary to some criticisms.
While acknowledging Jenrick’s strengths in diligence and focus on important issues, Gove indicated that his resemblance to a traditional Tory politician could hinder his leadership aspirations. Referring to the backlash against “Tory boys” in the last election, Gove pointed out the potential challenge this poses for Jenrick.
However, Gove’s tone shifted when discussing Badenoch, whom he described as brave, principled, brilliant, and kind. He commended her for standing by him during the 2019 Tory leadership contest, illustrating her unwavering support in difficult times.
Gove made it clear that neither he nor the Spectator would officially endorse any leadership candidate, although he has been a long-time supporter of Badenoch. In previous instances, he has championed her as a formidable contender with a no-nonsense approach that could pose a threat to opponents like Keir Starmer.
As the Conservative leadership race intensifies, both Jenrick and Badenoch are vying for the backing of the party members in a forthcoming vote that concludes at the end of October. The new leader of the opposition will be announced on November 2. Requests for comments from Jenrick’s office are pending.
