Moonlight’s glare could hinder views of the upcoming Orionid meteor shower, which is composed of debris from Halley’s comet. The Orionids, one of the two yearly meteor showers originating from the famed comet, are set to peak early next week, but the brightness of the waning moon may pose challenges for sky watchers hoping to catch a glimpse of the celestial spectacle.

Described as unpredictable, the Orionid meteor shower can vary in intensity from year to year. NASA’s Bill Cooke noted that under optimal conditions, observers could expect to see anywhere from 20 to 60 meteors per hour during the peak activity. This year, the shower coincides with the moon being 83% full, potentially reducing visibility. The Orionids will continue to be visible until November 22.

Meteor showers, such as the Orionids, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when Earth passes through the debris left behind by comets.
