Playing video games may make you sharper, scientists say

Playing video games has been found to potentially enhance cognitive function, according to scientists. In contrast, regular exercise does not show the same benefits, as indicated by recent research conducted in the field.

The study revealed that individuals who engage in playing video games demonstrate improved memory, attention, and reasoning skills compared to those who do not play video games. Surprisingly, moderate-level exercise equivalent to 150 minutes per week, in line with NHS guidelines, did not show any enhancement in a person’s memory and cognitive abilities. However, it did contribute positively to mental health.

The findings published on an online platform called PsyArXiv have challenged the widely-held belief that exercise can improve cognitive skills like learning, attention, perception, and memory. Professor Adrian Owen, a neuroscientist from Western University in Canada, highlighted that individuals who played video games extensively scored cognitively similar to people nearly 14 years younger, while infrequent gamers performed like individuals over 5 years younger.

Furthermore, those who did not meet the NHS exercise recommendations were more likely to experience depression and anxiety disorders. The research raised eyebrows by suggesting that video games could enhance cognition, especially compared to the ineffectiveness of regular exercise in this regard.

The study also highlighted the influence of different types of video games on cognitive abilities. Games involving engagement, strategy, visual attention, processing speed, and problem-solving were found to stimulate the brain’s reward system, leading to the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine. This activation may have long-lasting effects on cognitive function, according to the researchers.

Despite the surprising results regarding exercise and cognition, the researchers acknowledged that further exploration is needed, particularly into the effects of short bursts of vigorous exercise on cognitive functions. The research encompassed 1,000 adults aged between 18 and 87, who participated in brain tests to evaluate various cognitive skills. Participants also reported their video gaming habits and engaged in brain-stimulating activities such as puzzle games and sports-related games.

Professor Owen noted that the research could pave the way for selecting activities that support healthy cognitive aging. The study is set to be presented at the Manchester Science Festival, running from October 18-27, offering deeper insights into the impact of video games and exercise on cognitive abilities.

The research outcomes underline the potential benefits of playing video games on cognition and mental acuity. With further studies and advancements in this area, individuals may find new ways to boost cognitive skills and overall brain health.
