Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor expressed her satisfaction with her team’s efficiency following their 3-1 victory over FC Twente in the Champions League. This win marked Chelsea’s second consecutive triumph in the tournament, positioning them at the top of Group B.
Bompastor was pleased with the performance but is concerned about the fitness of Lauren James, who had to be replaced in the starting lineup by Johanna Rytting Kaneryd due to a foot issue that arose during the warm-up. Bompastor stated, “In the last moment of warm-up she felt something in her foot. At the moment it’s too early for me to say something else about LJ. We will have to assess her tomorrow in London and see how she feels.”
The match saw Aggie Beever-Jones scoring an early goal for Chelsea, followed by a remarkable long-range strike from Maika Hamano to double their lead before halftime. Guro Reiten sealed the victory with a goal from a penalty kick in the second half, marking her 50th goal for Chelsea. Despite Twente pulling one back through Nikee van Dijk in the 68th minute, Chelsea maintained control of the game.
Bompastor commended her team’s strong start, citing their efficiency in scoring quickly. She emphasised the importance of securing the three points and leading the group standings. The victory also allowed Bompastor to rotate and rest some players in preparation for the upcoming Women’s Super League match against Tottenham on Sunday.
Reflecting on the depth of quality in the squad, Bompastor highlighted the competitiveness within the team and her trust in every player. She praised the squad’s versatility and expressed confidence in their ability to perform well in every game.
Chelsea’s performance against Twente showcased their strength and determination in the Champions League, setting a positive tone for their future matches in the competition.
