The wife of a Conservative councillor faced court proceedings after making racially hateful comments online and bragging that she would use mental health as an excuse if she got arrested. Lucy Connolly, married to West Northamptonshire councillor Raymond Connolly, posted a message on July 29 inciting racial hatred against asylum-seekers. The message expressed sentiments supporting mass deportation and violence towards asylum-seekers.
During her sentencing hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Connolly sent a WhatsApp message on August 5, joking about the consequences of her initial tweet. This message was sent to her 10,000 followers. Additionally, Connolly mentioned in another message her intention to continue working as a childminder despite being de-registered, suggesting that if arrested, she would use mental health as a defence tactic.
The court heard that Connolly, who did not have any previous convictions, made further racially charged comments in other online posts. One post speculated on the nationality of a perpetrator involved in a violent incident, using derogatory language. Connolly’s defence lawyer, Tom Muir, highlighted the tragic loss of her child and the subsequent emotional distress she endured as factors contributing to her online behaviour.
Muir mentioned that the offending tweet was posted before any violence against asylum-seekers occurred and that Connolly did not anticipate or intend for any violence to result from her words. Despite issuing an apology for her initial post before her arrest, Connolly was sentenced to 31 months in jail for inciting racial hatred. She admitted to publishing threatening and abusive material with the intent to stir up racial animosity.
It was emphasised that her actions were influenced by traumatic experiences in her personal life, including the heartbreaking loss of her child due to medical complications. Though she attempted to quell the online uproar following her post, the consequences led to her incarceration. Connolly made an effort to express remorse and regret for her actions, acknowledging the harmful nature of her words and the negative impact they had on the community.
