Adam Peaty has shared the intense workouts and mindset shift that helped him prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games. The 29-year-old swimmer, who has achieved immense success in the sport with multiple world records and an unbeaten streak, faced challenges leading up to the Games. In 2022, he experienced setbacks both professionally and personally, including a fourth-place finish at the Commonwealth Games and a split from his partner, which contributed to his battle with depression.
Preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games proved to be one of the toughest challenges of Peaty’s career. In March 2023, feeling broken, he made a commitment to dedicate the next 14 months to intense training. His goal was not just to win medals but to find happiness at the Olympics. This internal contract with himself required hardcore training and a mindset shift towards accepting losses, evolving as an athlete, and playing the long game.
Peaty emphasises the importance of mindset in overcoming obstacles. He asked himself three critical questions: What was he trying to achieve? Did he understand the cost? Was he willing to pay that cost? After affirming his commitment, he powered through gruelling training sessions and secured a place in the Team GB swimming squad. Despite facing challenges in Paris, including contracting Covid-19 and missing out on a gold medal by a tiny margin, Peaty remains proud of his efforts and decision to honour the contract he made with himself.
Throughout his career, Peaty’s training regime has evolved. As a teenager, he juggled five gym sessions and ten swim sessions a week, leading up to covering 55,000m in the pool. In recent years, his schedule has been more strategic, balancing gym workouts with pool sessions and focusing on recovery. Peaty’s gym routines prioritise strength and power development, focusing on compound exercises like squats, bench presses, and pull-ups. He also incorporates complex training techniques to enhance his performance in the pool.
Recovery plays a crucial role in Peaty’s training routine, with a focus on physical and mental recuperation. Listening to his body and engaging in activities beyond swimming contribute to his overall well-being. Looking ahead, Peaty has hinted at a break from competitive swimming to focus on other aspects of his life, including his engagement and quality time with his son. While the possibility of returning for the 2028 Olympic Games remains open, for now, he is enjoying a well-deserved break after months of rigorous preparation and competition.
