An American was reportedly kidnapped from a southern Philippine town

An American national was reportedly kidnapped from a southern Philippine town, according to Philippine police. The incident involved four gunmen who abducted the American, identified as Elliot Onil Eastman, 26, from Vermont. The abduction took place in Sibuco town in the province of Zamboanga del Norte. The victim was shot in the leg as he tried to resist before being taken away by speedboat.

Authorities have launched a search operation to locate the abducted American. The regional police confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are being made to secure the safe recovery of the victim. The police have called on the public to provide any information that may assist in the investigation of the abduction.

Reports indicate that the gunmen, dressed in black clothing and armed with M16 rifles, forcefully took Eastman, who attempted to escape. After being shot in the leg, he was dragged into a speedboat that fled towards the provinces of Basilan or Sulu. Despite police pursuit, the gunmen and the victim were not immediately located.

Although background details of Eastman were not immediately provided by Philippine authorities, a person with a similar name has posted content on Facebook indicating a connection to a Muslim woman in Sibuco. The U.S. Embassy in Manila has not yet commented on the abduction report.

The southern Philippines has a history of kidnappings carried out by Muslim armed groups, including the notorious Abu Sayyaf, known for targeting Western tourists and missionaries for ransom. However, military and police operations have significantly reduced such incidents in recent years, though occasional cases still occur.

As the Philippines prepares for mid-term elections next year, security concerns in the region are heightened due to potential spikes in crime. Authorities warn of increased criminal activity, including kidnappings, as unscrupulous individuals seek funds for their political campaigns. Vigilance and swift action are emphasised to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the area.
