A tragic incident in rural India has left 25 people dead after consuming a bad batch of home-brewed alcohol. The fatalities occurred in the northern Indian state of Bihar, with 20 deaths in Siwan district and five in Saran. Currently, 49 individuals are still receiving medical treatment, and authorities have expressed concerns that the death toll may continue to climb, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
The consumption and sale of alcohol have been prohibited in Bihar since April 2016. According to the New Indian Express, family members of the victims in Siwan revealed that the toxic liquor was ingested on Monday and Tuesday. Following the consumption, the victims, aged between 21 and 40, experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, and vision loss.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police suggest that the liquor was contaminated with methyl alcohol, a poisonous substance. In response to the tragedy, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held discussions with state officials to address the situation. He urged immediate on-site assessments and strict actions against those accountable for the incident.
Authorities have initiated two special investigation teams, with one focusing on the criminal aspects of the incident and the other conducting a comprehensive review of similar occurrences in the recent past. So far, 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the deaths.
In Saran district, the families of the victims must pledge support for the alcohol ban to receive compensation. The tragic incident has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who have condemned the government for failing to prevent such incidents. This event is not an isolated occurrence in India, as previous incidents of deaths from illicitly brewed alcohol have plagued the country.
In light of these tragedies, there have been calls for stricter enforcement against illegal alcohol activities to prevent further loss of life. The government has pledged to take more decisive actions against those involved in the illicit alcohol trade.
