Ben White sets record straight over whether he ‘hates’ football

Arsenal star Ben White has taken the opportunity to clarify his relationship with football, addressing speculation that he “hates” the sport. White, who garnered attention for previously admitting he doesn’t watch football in his free time, explained his stance during an interview with former England goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The defender’s approach towards football differs from the stereotypical image of footballers engrossed in the sport, as he revealed that once he finishes training, he prefers to switch off and avoid engaging with it. This perspective had led to assumptions, especially after he withdrew from the England squad during the 2022 World Cup, citing personal reasons.

There were rumours at the time of a disagreement with Gareth Southgate’s assistant coach Steve Holland, an allegation Southgate denied. Since then, White has opted out of international selection, with Lee Carsley, the interim boss, confirming that White has requested not to be considered for call-ups.

In his recent interview with Ben Foster, White dispelled the notion that he despises football, emphasising that while he doesn’t watch it outside of training, he is still well-versed in the game and its intricacies. The time he spends away from football enables him to unwind and return to training with a refreshed focus, ultimately enhancing his performance on the pitch.

Looking towards the future, White revealed that he has no interest in pursuing a career in football punditry or media involvement post-retirement. Instead, he shared his simple aspirations, considering a post-football venture as a dog walker. His down-to-earth approach to life off the pitch reflects his preference for uncomplicated joys and a balanced perspective on his career in football.

Ben White’s candid insights into his relationship with football offer a refreshing take on the life of a professional footballer, emphasising the importance of boundaries and a holistic approach to well-being both on and off the field.
