Dumfriesshire community social hub set to open

Dumfriesshire is eagerly anticipating the grand opening of a new community social hub, The Cabin, located on Dunlop Road in Lochside, Dumfries. This transformed portable building is set to launch next Saturday, October 26, as a multipurpose creative safe space for the residents of Lochside to enjoy a variety of activities. The project, in collaboration with Dumfries’ The Stove and part of the What We Do Now network, has been in development since 2020.

The support for this Dumfriesshire project has been impressive, with Wheatley Homes South generously donating the portable building and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund providing national backing. The official launch event for The Cabin will take place between noon and 2pm, welcoming the public to explore the space and participate in various activities. Angela Gilmour, managing director of LIFT D&G, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming opening, describing The Cabin as “a place to gather and participate in a range of activities.”

In addition to the diverse programme of activities offered by LIFT, local artists Alice Francis and Rosie Giblin will introduce an initiative called ArtLab, funded by Creative Scotland, which will run for a year at The Cabin. This programme aims to build on the existing community-led creative work established through the What We Do Now network. Graham Rooney of The Stove commended the collaborative effort that brought The Cabin to fruition, acknowledging the support from various organisations and the Lochside residents.
