GOP Lawmakers Call for Probe into Consulting Firm’s Activities in China
A group of Republican lawmakers is pushing for a federal investigation into the U.S. consulting firm McKinsey due to its involvement with the Chinese government and state-owned entities. The lawmakers, including Rep. John Moolenaar of Michigan, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa, have raised concerns about McKinsey’s $480 million contracts with the Defense Department while also advising China’s government and state-controlled businesses.
In a letter to the Justice Department, the lawmakers allege that McKinsey misrepresented its connection with the Chinese government, posing potential risks to U.S. national security and potentially violating federal laws. While McKinsey has not responded to requests for comment on the letter, the firm has previously defended its practices in China, stating that it upholds strict client service policies.
The scrutiny on McKinsey’s dealings with China comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China, with a focus on preventing Beijing from gaining military or economic advantages through American assistance. The Biden administration has implemented export controls and restrictions on investments in key sectors to limit China’s technological advancements.
Recent reports suggest that McKinsey has scaled back its involvement with government-linked clients in China and reduced its workforce in the country. The lawmakers’ letter accuses McKinsey of aiding China in advancing its military and economy through undisclosed consulting services, potentially granting access to sensitive national security data through U.S. defense contracts.
McKinsey’s global managing partner, Bob Sternfels, has previously stated that the firm has not worked directly for the Chinese Communist Party or central government. However, the lawmakers’ letter raises concerns about McKinsey’s transparency regarding its work with the Chinese government, citing public information and documents.
