Israeli troops have reportedly killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, in a chance encounter in southern Gaza. Sinwar, known as Israel’s number one enemy, was targeted after being hunted for over a year for his role in sparking the devastating war in Gaza. The 62-year-old had been hiding in tunnels beneath Gaza, but authorities believe he stopped using communication devices that could have given away his location.
According to Israeli officials, Sinwar was found by a group of trainee squad commanders patrolling the Tal Al-Sultan suburb of Rafah. The troops spotted Sinwar with two others, leading to a confrontation where Sinwar was injured and ultimately killed. Drone footage released by the Israeli army shows Sinwar attempting to escape before being eliminated by Israeli forces.
Sinwar was initially identified as a fighter, but upon closer inspection, troops discovered his true identity as the Hamas leader. He was found with a weapon, flak jacket, and a significant amount of cash. Israeli forces took precautions with his body due to concerns about potential explosives, ultimately confirming his identity through DNA testing.
Following Sinwar’s death, some Israeli hostages’ families called for negotiations to end the conflict and free their loved ones. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant expressed determination to continue the fight against Hamas, seeing Sinwar’s death as a significant blow to the group. Israeli authorities are committed to pursuing the remaining hostages and bringing an end to the conflict in Gaza.
