However, the beloved dog was tragically shot dead on 6th October during a culling operation in the Besut district of northern Terengganu state.
People in Terengganu reported hearing loud gunshots, and soon discovered Kopi lying on her side, covered in blood and in severe pain. The incident has since triggered a wave of protests and demands for justice for Kopi, with many arguing that she was not a stray dog but rather cared for by the community.
Abby Razali, who uploaded the viral video of Kopi and looked after her, expressed deep sadness over the dog’s untimely death. She mentioned that Kopi had been a part of the community since she was a puppy and was adored by everyone for her gentle nature. Kopi was seen as a big sister to all the cats and puppies in the area, known for her friendly and harmless demeanour.
Since the killing of Kopi, Malaysians on social media have been using the hashtag #JusticeforKopi to express their shock and call for legal action against the local authorities responsible. This week, animal rights activists and independent rescuers gathered outside the Sentul police station, holding posters and rallying against the killing.
Several rights groups are planning to submit a memorandum to the Department of Veterinary Services, advocating for the ethical and humane treatment of stray animals across Malaysia. The tragic incident has left those who cared for Kopi devastated, as they argue that she was never a threat to anyone in the community.
The Besut district council president, Mohd Sukeri Ibrahim, defended the decision to use firearms in specific cases to manage or remove dangerous wild animals, citing regulations that allow for the handling of unclaimed dogs. However, questions have been raised about the justifiability of shooting a beloved dog like Kopi, who was known for her friendly interactions with humans and other animals.
