Laverne Cox has criticised the Republican party for its use of transphobia as a weapon in the current election campaign. The 52-year-old actor, well-known for her role as trans inmate Sophia on Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” has consistently used her platform to advocate for transgender rights. During an appearance on The Daily Show, Cox highlighted the spread of misinformation surrounding anti-trans legislation and campaigning.
She wore purple in support of Spirit Day, an annual event dedicated to fighting anti-LGBT bullying. Cox noted the increase in anti-LGBT laws in the US, including the ban on transgender under-18s accessing gender-affirming care in 25 states. With humour, she pointed out the absurdity of denying the existence of trans children and compared it to denying climate change.
Cox raised concerns about the Republican party’s expenditure of $65 million on campaign ads promoting anti-trans rhetoric. These ads target figures like presidential candidate Kamala Harris for her stance on gender-affirming care. Responding to these attacks, Cox expressed her disappointment, saying she would have preferred a lavish lifestyle rather than being targeted in hateful ads.
She called out the use of dehumanising language against marginalised groups, emphasising that it provides a foundation for discrimination and violence. Cox also addressed a legal dispute involving a Republican politician and allegations related to trans pornography, highlighting the hypocrisy of anti-trans politicians.
The actor urged for an end to the objectification and dehumanisation of transgender individuals, emphasising the need for mutual respect. Cox’s remarks come amidst increased restrictions on trans adults’ access to medical treatments in various states, illustrating a broader trend within the Republican party towards divisive policies.
In response to these developments, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups like the Human Rights Campaign have criticised the divisive tactics employed by some Republicans.
