Lewis Hamilton has shared his thoughts on the controversial device used by Red Bull that adjusts the height of its front bib ahead of the United States Grand Prix this weekend. Concerns were raised by rival teams that Red Bull might be bending parc ferme rules by manipulating the height of its T-tray between qualifying and race day. Talks between Red Bull and the FIA were held to ensure compliance, amid speculation that the team had a way to adjust the bib height from the cockpit, potentially gaining an advantage.
Seven-time F1 world champion Hamilton has addressed the issue, suggesting that innovation plays a crucial role in the sport and that teams should strive to find new ways to compete for championships. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton stated, “I think the name of our sport is all about innovation. Red Bull have been the leaders and they’ve innovated.” He acknowledged that teams push the boundaries of the rules to maximize performance but emphasised the need for better policing of regulations to ensure fair competition.
Red Bull confirmed the existence of the device but clarified that it cannot be used once the car is assembled. An agreement has been reached with the FIA to ensure that the device is used within the regulations, prohibiting alterations to the bib during different phases of the race weekend.
Max Verstappen, currently leading the drivers’ standings by 52 points, downplayed the significance of the device, stating that it primarily assists the car’s mechanics during assembly and does not impact performance on track. With Verstappen aiming to secure his first championship, the pressure is mounting as McLaren leads the constructors’ standings by 41 points, following Lando Norris’ recent win at the Singapore Grand Prix.
